About The University

The University of Jammu, accredited as 'A+' grade University by National Assessment & Accreditation Council of India, came into existence in 1969 vide Kashmir and Jammu Universities Act 1969 following bifurcation of the erstwhile University of Jammu and Kashmir (established in 1948).

The University of Jammu has recently been awarded 51 st rank in the National Institutional Ranking Framework conducted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. It has also been granted autonomy by the University Grants Commission for maintaining high academic standards and in terms of the graded autonomy, the University of Jammu has been recognized category-I university.

Apart from its main new campus at Bahu Wali Rakh, old campus and Poonch House in Jammu, the University has eleven other campuses, out of which seven campuses located at Bhaderwah, Kathua, Kishtwar, Poonch, Ramnagar, Reasi and Udhampur are functional. The Directorate of Distance Education is situated in the main campus of the University and has an enrolment of about 12000 distance learners in postgraduate and undergraduate programmes.

The University provides instructions in such branches of learning as it deems fit and makes provision for research and advancement and dissemination of knowledge. The University comprises of eleven faculties viz Arts, Business Studies, Education, Social Sciences, Music and Fine Arts, Medical sciences and Engineering.

Teaching- learning and research are being carried out by thirty six departments, twelve centres and one hundred and twenty six affiliated colleges. The University offers more than seventy programmes at the postgraduate and undergraduate level in different faculties. It offers Ph.D. in thirty seven and M.Phil. in twenty six disciplines. It also confers honorary degrees or other distinctions on the persons of exceptional caliber. It is primarily a research, teaching, affiliating, examining body involved in promotion of arts, science, commerce and other branches of learning.

The University provides excellent academic environment and state-of-the-art infrastructural facilities for research. The University is open to all classes and creeds with the objective of imparting man-making education.
