About The Directorate

Directorate of Distance & online Education (DD & OE) (formerly known as The Directorate of Distance Education) was established on 3rd March 1976 in the University of Jammu. The University of Jammu was established in 1969 vide Kashmir and Jammu Universities Act 1969 following bifurcation of the erstwhile University of Jammu and Kashmir (established in 1948). With the establishment of Directorate of Distance Education, the University of Jammu within 7 years of its establishment became a dual mode university from a conventional University.

The Directorate of Distance & online Education is located in the main New Campus of the University which houses the Teaching Departments, Centres, Administration Block, Examination Wing, College Development Council, Department of Student Welfare, Information Wing, Department of Lifelong Learning, Computer Center, Human Resource Development Centre, Post Office, J&K Bank, Book Shop, Health Centre, Guest House, Central Library, Auditorium, Hostels, Gymnasium, Cafeteria, Canteens, Residential quarters and many more facilities. The Directorate of Distance Education is located near the Law School and the famous General Zorawar Singh Auditorium Complex.

The Directorate offers Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Diploma programmes to cater to the needs of diverse learners. The enrolment has grown from under 100 students in the year of its establishment to about 12000 students in 2022-23. This multi-faculty institution has 11 permanent teachers with a strong orientation and experience in distance education. The Directorate also uses the services of visiting and contractual faculty.

The Directorate follows multimedia approach to teaching and learning. In order to augment the delivery of the programmes being offered, the latest and updated self learning material is provided to the distance learners by hand and through post. The Directorate has adequate infrastructure for Personal Contact Programmes and Counseling Sessions. The Directorate has a well stocked library with a collection of about 37,000 books, magazines and periodicals. The e- resources in the library are accessed through UGC-Infonet Digital Library Consortium. It has computer laboratory with internet and wi-fi facility also.

The Directorate has a well furnished committee room for holding meetings, guest lectures and extension lectures. The Directorate has a seminar hall which is housed in a six storeyed new building of the DDE with a seating capacity of about 200.

The Directorate has also established a network of learner support centres which are located at Government Degree College Rajouri, Kathua, Udhampur and Bhaderwah to provide effective academic, administrative and information support services to distance learners at undergraduate level.

The faculty, administrative and support services staff of the Directorate are trained and committed to provide cutting edge services to the satisfaction of distance learners.
